OpenSolar
I am currently a Senior Designer (UX/UI – Global Product) at OpenSolar, the world’s leading free SaaS platform for renewable energy design and delivery. Traditionally focused on B2B services, the platform enables solar installers to design, sell, deliver, and install both solar and non-solar systems. As part of the Customer Pod, I was initially tasked with researching, conceptualising, testing, and delivering a new post-sale home monitoring app that would provide a seamless B2C experience built upon the existing design system.
However, extensive research uncovered inconsistencies across customer-facing touch points, leading to a much broader initiative focused on redesigning the entire customer experience across both front-end and back-end systems. The goal is to transform a task-oriented B2B platform into a more emotional, rewarding, and intuitive B2C experience that strengthens the relationship between installers and customers post-sale, while creating monetisation and savings opportunities for both parties through a more symbiotic ecosystem.
Designing, installing, and monitoring renewable energy systems involves significant technical, legal, and financial complexity, but our philosophy is that users should not need expert-level knowledge to benefit from the product — much like you do not need to be a mechanic to drive a car. My role has involved extensive user research with real-life testers, installers, and competitor analysis, generating valuable qualitative and quantitative insights to inform decision-making.
Collaboration has been central to the process, using tools such as Figma and FigJam alongside complex prototyping workflows in Cursor, integrated with GitHub pull requests and Jira for rapid iteration, branching, and development handover. While the project is still evolving, it is the largest and fastest-moving product transformation I have worked on to date.
